A downloadable game for Windows

An experimental horror game meant to teach myself some of the basics of Unreal Engine. Made in one day, this was my first time using the software. This game was based on TheHorrorFramework.

By making this game I learnt:

  • Creating basic shapes and adding materials to them.
  • Editing the shapes, including slicing and duplicating parts.
  • Editing the parent materials, adjusting parameters such as normal intensity, metallic textures and colour tints, as well as rotating the textures and adjusting tilings.
  • Moving, rotating or scaling shapes in the viewport, both by dragging the cursor or editing the outliner settings.
  • Adding and editing collision boxes, especially for blocking paths.
  • Adding and editing different types of light items.
  • Adding and replacing static meshes, as well as editing their materials.
  • Adding and replacing skeletal meshes.
  • Creating a main menu with the options to start or quit the game.
  • Adding or editing text for the UI menus.
  • Adding or editing pivot points for opening doors.
  • Implementing blueprints for automatic doors, doors that open by pressing the interact button, doors that open with a switch, and a door that opens with a key.
  • Implementing blueprints for light switches.
  • Implementing different types of main character animations, including idle, walking, running and jumping.
  • Implementing different types of enemy animations, including running, floating and attacking.
  • Implementing basic chasing and attacking AI for the enemy.
  • Implementing player controls.
  • Implementing a flashlight system.
  • Implementing a health and stamina system, as well as a HUD.
  • Implementing a few sound effects, such as walking steps and flashlight clicks.
  • Creating a functional Game Over menu after the player dies.
  • Creating a functional end screen after the player manages to escape.
  • Creating or editing existing blueprints for stopping movement, removing debug displays, and set duration items.

What is next?

  • Implementing music for each level.
  • Adding sound effects to other interactions, e.g. monster sounds or breathing sounds when out of stamina.
  • Having an Options button on the main menu, allowing for basic settings.
  • Implementing a note-reading system, possibly in journal format.
  • Implementing numerrical puzzles, e.g. rotating lock or typing in a password.
  • Implementing graphic puzzles, e.g. ordering a series of pictures.
  • Implement a pick-up/drop/place system, allowing for replacing objects into the map.
